Shade Trees

Ornamental & Shade Trees

These trees provide beauty, structure, and cooling shade, creating a welcoming and picturesque outdoor environment.

Everyone enjoys the beauty a tree provides. In fact, deciduous trees are the basic element for any landscape plan. They can create shady conditions for planting flowers or act as the focal point within a specific area of the garden. But the wrong tree or one planted in the wrong spot can actually detract from the overall landscape.

A tree is a long-term investment; don't risk losing 5 to 10 years of precious tree growing time by selecting the wrong tree! The University of Illinois Extension has created a Web site titled "Selecting Trees for Your Home" where homeowners can learn about the various types of trees and their individual characteristics. But the best way to make wise choices is to let the professional design staff at Reds help you decide where a tree is needed and what that tree should do to enhance your landscape. Then let us help you select a species that will meet your requirements for shade, beauty, color, and protection from harsh winds.

Our Plant List includes the scientific (Latin) names of ornamental and shade trees we commonly carry. Click the name of each plant for a listing of varieties within each genus.

While these plants will all be available at some point, we cannot guarantee that they will be in stock on any given day. So if you're looking for something specific, please call ahead or email us for current availability.

Trees really are green!

According to computer models created by the U.S. Department of Energy, carefully positioned trees can save up to 25% of a household's energy consumption for heating and cooling, They estimate that the proper placement of only three trees would save an average household between $100 and $250 in energy costs annually.

Deciduous trees are preferable to evergreens when it comes to increasing the energy efficiency of your home. The leafy canopy shades your home in the heat of the summer, but when the leaves fall, warming sunlight is able to reach your walls and windows unhindered.
